NSC Calls on Biden Administration to Prioritize Safety

Crash mitigation technologies should be part of all fleet vehicles purchased by the federal government.

January 29, 2021

Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council supports the Biden Administration’s efforts to ensure a zero-emission federal fleet. In addition, we call on the Biden administration to prioritize safety by purchasing vehicles with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and other safety technologies, and committing to zero deaths on American roadways by 2050.

We have been troubled by the increase in fatalities during the pandemic. Wide deployment of technologies available today would have meaningful impact to reduce fatal crashes. Crash mitigation technologies like ADAS should be part of all fleet vehicles purchased by the federal government. The National Transportation Safety Board, the premier investigative safety agency, has recommended these life-saving technologies for many years. Advanced driver assistance systems are available to the public and offer safety benefits to all roadway users. However, they are often only included as part of “premium” packages on newer vehicles. NSC believes safety technology should be made available on all new vehicles. Through its buying power, the federal government has the ability to drive manufacturers to make these technologies more widely available. We urge them to exercise it.

NSC recently called on President Biden to commit to the goal of zero roadway deaths by 2050. Zero deaths on the roads and the administration’s commitment to zero emissions complement one another, and both should be priorities of the administration going forward. We are committed to working with the administration to help save lives on the roadways in the most sustainable way possible.
